Congratulations on taking a step towards a beautiful smile by having your teeth professionally whitened!  As amazing as your teeth look right now, whitening is not a permanent process.  Many things in your day to day life can darken your whitened teeth, but if you follow the below tips you can keep the new glow of your smile longer.

Avoid Tobacco Products
If you begin to smoke immediately after your professional whitening, your teeth will fade within a few weeks.  Cigars and cigarettes leave tar deposits on your teeth in a variety of colors, from gray, to brown, to even green.  Freshly whitened teeth are exceptionally susceptible to the deposits left from smoking, so you should avoid this as much as possible.

Avoid Dark Foods and Beverages
Just like tobacco products, dark colored food and drinks also have the ability to reverse your teeth whitening treatment by staining your teeth.  Foods like blueberry pie (not fresh blueberries), pomegranates, and blackberries will stain your teeth quickly. Beverages such as coffee, red wine, black tea, grape juice and soda will also stain your teeth.  One tip to be able to continue drinking these is to use a straw whenever possible.  Or in the case of coffee, add a little cream to dilute it.  You don’t have to give up your favorite foods and drinks entirely, just consume them in limited quantities.

Schedule Your Touch Up Appointments
Professional whitening treatments don’t last forever.  To keep your teeth at their whitest, you should schedule regular whitening appointment; every 3-6 months is generally a good time frame.  Speak with your cosmetic dentist in Methuen to determine the best schedule for you.
